The Integrative Medicine
Institute has collected data from practitioners in Southwest
Health Options an independent practice association (IPA) network
in Santa Fe, New Mexico which offered CAM services to insured
patients between 1998 and 2000. The members of this practice
network developed bridges among conventional and CAM health
care providers in the Santa Fe medical community and formally
created a structure for reimbursement from the insurance industry.
Utilization management and peer review led by Dr. Riley, the
medical director kept practitioners aware of the benefits and
outcomes of various therapies useful for their patients. Practitioners
in SHO were responsible for their own practice space and management
but cooperated in an independent practice association working
in partnership with the insurance industry. This data was presented
at the Harvard/UCSF research conference in May of 2001 and has
been submitted for publication.
